Executive Leadership Teams:

Facilitator Leadership™

Facilitator Leadership™ is a replacement for Command and Control Leadership.

Command and Control Leadership is characterized by setting goals and driving everyone as hard as possible to attain or exceed the targets. The focus is on outcomes and not enough on the issues impacting the talented individuals making it all happen.

There must be goals with timelines. But the environment within which talented individuals accomplish those goals must be supportive and not just demanding. Establishing the environment begins with a defined leadership framework within which everyday activities and innovation get performed without stress, chaos, and dysfunction. Leaders behave as orchestrators rather than commanders. The parts work together more effectively and efficiently.

Facilitator Leadership™ sets the same high goals, but there is deliberate attention to facilitating how talented individuals get treated, respected, and engaged.

The Facilitator Leadership™ style of leading is very similar to a traditional facilitator in many ways. The focus is on others, what others are doing, equipping them, helping them learn, recognizing their contributions, and helping them think their way to needed solutions. While the action is ongoing, their questions are:

1. Are we doing the right things?

2. Are we going in the right direction?

3. How can I help this individual or situation?

4. How do I encourage this individual or situation?

5. What new resources are needed?

6. How can we better equip this individual or team?

7. What issues can become barriers in the future?

An advantage of this style is the intentional engagement with talented individuals and the big picture. The context for decisions and coaching considers what came before and what will happen after. It examines how the activities and outcomes impact all parts of the organization. It includes discussions about what, why, when, where, and how.

The Facilitator Leadership™ style needs to get added and nurtured in your organization if you expect to do the right things, in the right way, and the correct sequence. The percentage of this style must increase as the organization grows. If it is not a strength for you, then bring in a coach to help you engage with others and help you develop and amplify this capability and style.

Elite performance and outcomes require structure and discipline. Creating and using a defined and clarified executive leadership system provides the structure and discipline within which the items described above get fully applied.

We are passionate about helping executive teams get to their exceptional level.

To help this movement, I have devoted years to building the system presented in the Exceptional Executive Teams book. I wish I had known this earlier in my life. I would have contributed to others’ lives even more positively.
