Executive Leadership Teams:

A Leadership System is Necessary

Executive leadership teams need a system in the same way the accounting team needs a system. A system provides structure and discipline to collect the right information, so the information is helpful to users. A system is more than just technology.

A system is built upon a methodology. The technology guides and enables the collection of the right information and then makes it available to develop insights and guide decision-making.

In our research activities, when we ask an executive leadership team about their accounting system, they respond with the name of the technology used for accounting. When we ask them about their sales system, they respond with the name of the technology used by the sales team. When we asked them about their executive leadership system, they did not have an answer. That is how we uncover and clarify their need and our opportunity.

Executive leadership teams are responsible for (1) growing the business, (2) assuring exceptional performance, (3) and creating value of their business (and in each talented individual engaged with their enterprise). Accomplishing these three necessities requires structure, discipline, and guidance. There must be a firm commitment to performing at elite levels.

Every system begins with a framework. The framework for an executive leadership system must have these four foundational dimensions; (1) Connect & Align, (2) Strategic Initiatives, (3) Stakeholders, (4) Measurements.

The executive team must be connected and aligned at their thinking level. There must be clarity for all when creating, prioritizing, and implementing strategic initiatives. Everyone must understand their role and how it fits within the organization’s activities to attract, engage, and serve employees, customers, vendors, and other alliances. The use and accuracy of measurements and reporting must be continually monitored and assessed. Each dimension must be accomplished consistently throughout the entire organization. These four dimensions are the foundation needed for executive leadership teams to excel.

Exceptional success begins with an elite executive team. Elite is a journey requiring structure, discipline, and guidance. Structure, discipline, and guidance are best accomplished with methodology, related technology, and a knowledgeable coach.

We are passionate about helping executive teams get to their exceptional level.

To help this movement, I have devoted years to building the system presented in the Exceptional Executive Teams book. I wish I had known this earlier in my life. I would have contributed to others’ lives even more positively.
